Why There Were 2 Emmy Awards Ceremonies in 2024

Viewers got a double dose of the Primetime Emmys this year.
The 2024 Emmy Awards, hosted by Dan Levy and Eugene Levy, took place Sept. 15. However, eight months ago, there was another Primetime Emmys—the 2023 event, hosted by Anthony Anderson, was held in January, after being postponed from the previous September.
The reason for the delay? Hollywood writers and actors' strikes over labor disputes with major studios, which prohibited union members from appearing at award shows.
While the Primetime Emmys have been postponed before, this marks the first time two ceremonies have taken place in one year. The last time the date of the Emmy Awards was pushed back was in 2001, when it was delayed twice for a total of two months in wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and subsequent U.S. military action in Afghanistan.
This time, the delay was caused by the strikes in the entertainment industry. In May 2023, the Writers Guild of America (WGA), representing more than 11,000 TV and movie screenwriters, went on strike for the first time in 15 years, halting production of most films and television shows.
Then the following July, two days after the 2023 Emmy nominations were announced, the Screen Actors Guild—American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA)—representing about 160,000 performers and other media professionals—joined the picket lines. It was the first time the WGA and the actors' union have gone on strike together since 1960.
So, the Television Academy postponed the 2023 Emmys from its original date of Sept. 18. Eventually, the WGA reached an agreement to return to work on Sept. 27 after 148 days, while SAG-AFTRA resolved their dispute in November after 118 days. When the 2023 Emmys were ultimately held live on Jan. 15, the big winners included Succession, The Bear and Beef.
The 2024 Emmys marked the return of TV’s big night, which featured many memorable moments and winners, including the Baby Reindeer cast and, once again, The Bear.
